ANDOVER TREES UNITED
MAY
2026 NEWSLETTER
Dear Friends,

It is wonderful to now see spring in full swing. The mornings are full of birdsong and the landscape is bright with fresh green growth. It is a lovely time to visit The Diamond Wood and enjoy the season as it comes to life.

April marked the beginning of the survey season for this year’s Nature in Harmony wildlife project and the start of seed sowing for this year’s Disappearing Wildflowers project. As the seedlings germinate (by the many 100!), we invite you to join the wildflower growing through joining one of the group sessions, the watering rota or going along at a time to suit you. Just let Abbey know what works best for you. And of course we also have quite a few sessions for children at their schools - this is also a great way to get involved

Looking ahead, we are excited for our upcoming Auction of Promises on the 22nd May. Many wonderful promises and gifts have been donated - the list can be viewed here .More details can be found below, but the most important thing to say is that the charity relies heavily on this event being a success for it to continue its work with young people... which means, we need YOU <3 . Please buy tickets and if you really can't make it, it's OK to send us an absentee bid. THANK YOU.

As ever, this newsletter comes with a huge thank you and shout out to our wonderful volunteers for their hard work and enthusiasm.

Read on to find out what else the team has been up to and the exciting things we have coming up.

MEET THE TEAM

Hi!
I'm Tara and have volunteered for Andover Trees on and off for a few years.

I am all about sustainability and loved seeing what this amazing Charity in our local community has been doing. My own children were involved with planting trees right at the beginning and I love that personal connection. I enjoy supporting the charity and other volunteers by helping out on the Monday sessions.

I sometimes have to work on Mondays but if not required. I always try to show up to do what I can in the woods. I am not a gardener and I struggle with the cold in the winter but I make myself useful in the cabin sorting refreshments and cleaning. I have learned so much and have recently enjoyed the training sessions learning about and actioning Coppicing and Hazel hedge laying.
As Wendy is always telling me, any help however infrequent is useful and appreciated. Why not come and take a look and see what you can do to help?

FOR OUR WORK WITH CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE

Our Annual Fundraiser Auction of Promises is back!

Friday 22nd May at Wherwell Village Hall, 6:45 PM to 11:00 PM

Join us for Andover Trees’ biggest fundraising event of the year! A special evening bringing together supporters, volunteers and friends of the woodland for a fun and memorable night in support of The Diamond Woods.

Funds raised during the evening will directly support Andover Trees United’s work with young people - whether that be supporting the annual graduate ecology internship, our work with children across our local schools or Tall Tales & Seasonal Stories, our holiday activity programme with storyteller Amanda.
(If you'd like to see the extensive range of opportunities we run to support all the children in our community, delivered through our local schools, take a look here. This is what your support of this event will help to keep going.)

The evening features our popular Auction of Promises, where a fantastic range of experiences, gifts and local treats - all donated by individuals and local businesses - will be auctioned to raise vital funds for children's conservation activities, outdoor learning and access to nature. Take a look at what's on offer here.

Tickets: £35 per person (Under 18s £15). This includes: Welcome drink, two course dinner, hot drinks and cookies, live music, entry into the lucky number draw and a subsidised bar. Book your tickets here:

EARTH DAY

Earth Day for us is always special and the chance to bring the children of Andover to their wood to celebrate their world.

Throughout the month, we have been working closely with local schools in Andover, bringing children into direct contact with nature. From sowing wildflower seeds to learning about biodiversity and the role each species plays in supporting ecosystems, these sessions are designed to do more than educate, they are about building a lasting connection with the natural world.

On Earth Day we were honoured to welcome children and their teachers from Knights Enham Juniors and Icknield to share this special day. At the center of the session was our Earth Table and a jointly created Love Letter to the Earth; alongside this, our Nature Observation Nooks encouraged a different kind of engagement. Led by our intern Kanchi, pupils created their own nature journals before heading out into the woodland. There, they observed their surroundings, recording plants, trees and the smaller details that make woodland ecosystems so vital for biodiversity.
At Andover Trees United, we are proud to play a role in protecting local biodiversity, restoring woodland habitats and inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards.

APRIL ROUNDUP
Celebrate last month's amazing work of volunteers and staff

MONDAY VOLUNTEER CONSERVATION DAYS

Every Monday, whether at Harmony Woods or the Vigo Road allotment, our volunteer days bring together teamwork, laughter, and care for nature. This month we made major moves as planning and mapping out future developments took place alongside the exciting installation of official sign boards! Our pond has also been pampered with a new bank and ladder installed for future dips. a wind-terbine is also in the works with exciting promise of more sustainability.
alongside all this, our usual woodland care tasks are picking up pace as spring picks up, with seed sewing, mulching, weeding and all the rest of it.
Thank you to our Monday workday volunteers for all your hard work!

COMMUNITY CONSERVATION DAY WITH ABEL & COLE

Work was done in teams: team one took on seed sowing while team two the second team tackled the more physical job of digging holes for new signage and notice boards. Working across three different locations in the wood, they prepared the ground for posts that will soon hold our upcoming signage!
A big thank you to all the families who came along and helped out — your time and energy make a real difference to the woodland.

Thanks to everyone who joined our half term Tall Tales & Seasonal Stories event on Monday 30th March. It was a great start to the Easter holidays, featuring interactive storytelling from Amanda Kane-Smith of Merry-Go-Round Storytelling, along with natural egg dyeing led by Jolanta Rolt. It was a lovely way to explore the outdoors and connect with nature whilst celebrating Easter.

JANE GOODALL DAY/ FIRST SURVEY DAY

As we celebrated the first-ever GOODallDAY on April 3rd, in memory of the late Dr Jane Goodall, we’re proud to have marked the day by carrying out our first biodiversity survey of 2026.

Together, Abbey and Kanchi surveyed life across our site from wildflowers and grasses to birds, pollinators and butterflies, building a picture of how our woodland is evolving and where we can continue to support it.

ANDOVER COLLEGE ART PROJECT

This month we were delighted to welcome back Arts and Business students from Andover College for a second year
The students have done stellar work in aiding and learning about woodland management through weeding, mulching, and watering the newly seeded areas from our growing wildflower efforts. Photographs, reflections and sketches will be transformed into artworks which will form part of an exhibition later in the year.

DISAPPEARING WILDFLOWERS: MENS BREAKFAST TALK

We were delighted to join the Men’s Breakfast Club for a morning of conversation, connection and a little bit of nature in action. From sharing more about what we do at Andover Trees, to getting hands-on with seed sowing, it was a brilliant way to bring people together and celebrate the season of renewal.

Great company, shared learning, and the chance to plant something that will grow long after the day itself.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us and got involved. We loved being part of it!

DISAPPEARING WILDFLOWERS: WILLOW COURT SEED SOWING

Andover Trees was built by a community. We created a place for nature and people to thrive through education and collaboration. We make sure to keep that community spirit alive through events and initiatives at and outside of the woods. On Friday, we had the pleasure of returning to Willow Court to work with residents as part of our Disappearing Wildflowers campaign. These visits are a chance for residents to connect with nature, chat with the team and share stories

DISAPPEARING WILDFLOWERS: SEED SOWING IN SCHOOLS

From the first seeds sown to the smiles, and love of nature we’ve seen from pupils, it’s clear this work is already making an impact.
We kicked off our campaign on 13th April with pupils from Knights Enham Junior School. Just two days later, on the 15th April, we welcomed Year 3 from Clatford Primary School for our second session, followed by Portway Juniors on the 19th. A huge shoutout to all the children and their teachers for taking action to make a difference.

This is only the start. We have many more school sessions planned in the weeks ahead, and we’ll report back soon!
At its heart, the Disappearing Wildflowers campaign reflects everything we stand for at Andover Trees United - educating, inspiring and creating meaningful opportunities for people, especially young people, to connect with nature.
