ANDOVER TREES UNITED

MAY 2025 NEWSLETTER

Dear Friends,

As we step into May, Harmony Woods is looking beautiful and is definitely worth a visit. We are looking forward to our upcoming Auction of Promises, where we are raising funds to support young people learning in nature and caring for the environment. We’re also excited for our Community Conservation Day, which will see continued progress in our Wildflower Project, the second Wild Harmony event, and the May Nature Explorers days, among other exciting events!

April was a great month, with progress made on essential tasks at our allotment and in Harmony Woods during our conservation days, along with the installation of the new portacabin. The month also included brilliant Nature Explorers Easter Half-Term activities, our first Wild Harmony event of the year, and the start of the survey season. Read on to learn more.

A huge thank you to all our volunteers for your hard work and enthusiasm!

MEET OUR VOLUNTEERS

In April, we celebrated Earth Dayβ€”a reminder of our planet’s beauty and our shared duty to protect it. Fittingly, it was also the day Natalia began her work experience with ATU. She's currently conducting a biodiversity survey of the pond, research that may help guide our habitat management efforts moving forward. Natalia brought curiosity and a love of nature that perfectly aligns with our mission.

Here’s what she had to say about her journey with ATU:

''I have been with ATU for nearly four years, having joined through the Nature in Harmony Exchange Project. Being at ATU has given me so many opportunities to work in a field of Youth Leading, giving kids an education while also having fun with crafts and I love seeing them grow through nature interaction. Volunteering with the Youth Academies and with the Intern has taught me so much knowledge that I am so grateful for and I cannot wait for my opportunities to work with likeminded people in the future.''

LATEST NEWS

START OF THE SURVEY SEASON

Our Current Ecology Intern Hebe has started surveying for 2025, Hebe writes:

''April marks the start of ATU’s Nature in Harmony flora and fauna surveying programme. It's been exciting to begin weekly surveys in Harmony Woods and the wider Diamond Wood, and to observe how quickly the environment is changing with the arrival of spring. For six months, until the end of September, I’ll be surveying birds, wildflowers, butterflies, and pollinators. This year, I’m following the same transects surveyed by our first intern, Alex, in 2020. I'm particularly interested in comparing this year’s biodiversity with the 2020 data to see how biodiversity and habitats have changed in five years. The programme also includes Wild Harmony eventsβ€”details are available in the Upcoming Events section.''

ANNOUNCING THE NEW LOGO FOR ANDOVER TREES UNITED

As part of our strategic planning, the charity has reflected on how we communicate our mission and impact. While tree planting remains at the heart of what we do, our work now also includes community engagement, supporting biodiversity, and encouraging sustainable living and nature connection. With this broader focus, our visual identity needed to evolve alongside us.

In 2011, children and young people were invited to name the project and design a logo embodies young people coming together to plant trees and stay connected to their woodlandβ€”by caring for it, learning from it, and respectfully enjoying it. The name Andover Trees United embodies this. The original logo, created by 10-year-old Omar Darby and chosen by then Mayor of Test Valley, Cllr Chris Lynn, represents trees and children growing together. Now that the woodland is established and our work has expanded, it's time for the logo to grow as well.

Thanks to Lottery funding, we welcomed PR & Comms Officer Hannah Cantellow, who designed a new logo rooted in the original, reflecting our journey as we grow into the future. We're proud to launch it in May, marking a month of growth and climate action awareness.

MONDAY VOLUNTEER CONSERVATION DAYS

MONDAY 28TH APRIL 2025 AT HARMONY WOODS
Last week’s volunteer conservation day at Harmony woods was fantastic. Thank you to our amazing team: Doreen, Wendy, Liang, Liz, Simone, Sam, Annabel, Stephen, Paul, Natalia, and the brilliant staff and students from Harrow Way.

It was a busy day completing lots of important jobs. Doreen cleaned signs and collected palings, while Liang, Simone, and Annabel worked on Nature’s Calendar with help from Harrow Way students. Stephen, Sam, and Paul repositioned a new storage cupboard for the cabin, and Wendy & Natalia even did an interview with That’s TV! Everyone enjoyed a well-earned tea break, and later, Natalia led a pond survey.

Huge thanks to everyone for their energy and enthusiasm!

APRIL'S COMMUNITY CONSERVATION DAY
SATURDAY 12TH APRIL AT VIGO ROAD ALLOTMENT
This month’s Community Conservation Day at the Vigo Road allotment was a great success, with a fantastic group of volunteers helping us welcome wildflower season. We planted a mix of wildflower seeds, weeded the patio area, and cleaned potsβ€”essential tasks to keep the allotment thriving and kick off this year’s wildflower growing. The children also got creative making flower prints. A big thank you to everyone who joined us!

We’re already looking forward to the next Community Conservation Day on Saturday 10th May β€” hope to see you there!

NATURE EXPLORERS: EASTER TRADITIONAL CRAFTS

Over half term, we held a brilliant Traditional Easter Egg Decorating Workshop with local artist Jolanta Rolt, who introduced families to a centuries-old Lithuanian craft. Children used spring flowers and woodland plants, along with onion skins and red cabbage, to create stunning naturally dyed eggs. While the eggs simmered, the day continued with an Easter Egg Hunt led by Matt, Natalia, and Hebe, followed by nature-themed games and well-earned hot cross buns.

Huge thanks to Jolanta for sharing this meaningful tradition, to our dedicated volunteers for supporting the event, and to everyone who took part and made it so special.

NATURE EXPLORERS: BUG HOTELS

On Wednesday 16th April, Matt and Natalia welcomed a small group of young nature lovers to Harmony Woods for a magical bug hotel building session.

The day began with a scavenger hunt for natural materialsβ€”feathers, twigs, leaves, daisies, and more. After a delicious refreshment break, we gathered for Natalia’s enchanting retelling of Stick Man, with Matt giving an Oscar-worthy performance of the beloved character. Then it was time to build bug hotels using bamboo and the treasures we’d gathered, creating fantastic shelters for insects to support biodiversity at Harmony woods.

Organisers thanked all the families who joined, with special appreciation for Matt and Natalia, leading the session solo for the first time. Their creativity and care made the event a real success.

SOW, GROW, PLANT
A huge thank you to everyone who collected our Wildflower Seed Kits! Your participation is helping us begin the wildflower season as well as also supporting pollinators and benefiting our local ecosystems. We look forward to the rest of the wildflower growing season! Please join us for May's community conservation day where we will be pricking out seeds that will later bloom in the new meadow at Harmony Woods. More information in upcoming events!
WILD HARMONY
A huge thank you to everyone who came along to our first Wild Harmony event at Harmony Woods! It was a wonderful way to start this year’s citizen science events. We spotted some amazing species on our biodiversity walk – including a yellowhammer, skylarks, and a green-winged orchid. Afterwards, we spent some peaceful time nature journalling – it was lovely to observe and reflect on the species we’d seen through art and observation.

Looking forward to the next Wild Harmony event on the 17th May where we will be identifying trees in Spring.
