ANDOVER TREES UNITED

JUNE 2025 NEWSLETTER

Dear Friends,

May saw our wildflower meadow beginning to bloom, bringing colour and many pollinators to Harmony Woods. As well as continuing our regular activities, last month was packed with exciting events. A highlight of the month was Supper with the Auction of Promises, which set a new fundraising record for this annual initiative! We also had several events that supported progress on our wildflower project, including workplace volunteering days, the Andover Gardening Fair, and wildflower sowing at Harrow Way. We were also delighted to welcome visitors from Longstock St Mary’s Church to Harmony Woods, and our half-term Nature Explorers sessions were a great success.

June is set to be another exciting month, with the start of our annual community archaeology project In Search of the Ditch: Between the Barrows 2025. Look forward to June’s Wild Harmony event, regular volunteering sessions, the Wellbeing Fair and more in upcoming events!

MEET OUR VOLUNTEERS

Matt Thomas

''Hello everyone I’m Matt a volunteer youth leader at Andover Trees United. I have been volunteering since 2018 and have loved watching the woodland develop over the years with our two latest editions of the cabin and on site field study office. I would welcome anyone to come along and join as you really have no need for expertise as it will grow on you along the way. My favourite role at Andover Trees is definitely helping to run the nature activities for local children and young people as they are the future of whom we are growing the woodland for''.

ACTION OF PROMISES 2025

Andover Trees United is proud to share the success of its 2025 Auction of Promises, which raised a fantastic Β£4,700 on 23rd May at Wherwell Village Hall. The evening brought together our community for a celebration of generosity, connection, and meaningful giving. Over 60 unique promises and items were donated by local residents, businesses, and supporters.

A huge thank you to Sid Dajani, our brilliant and entertaining auctioneer, whose energy kept the bids rolling and spirits high throughout the evening. Guests also enjoyed a delicious supper courtesy of Bread and Butter Catering and beautiful live music from Matty Twigg. We’re incredibly grateful to all who donated promises, placed bids, volunteered, or supported the event. Special thanks to our valued sponsors: Abel & Cole, Hildon Water, and Queensland Bakery Co.

Behind the scenes, our dedicated team of volunteers and staff worked tirelessly to bring the event together. We would like to shine a spotlight on Elizabeth Scrace, who ensured that every detail was managed and every pound accounted for.

The funds raised will support outdoor nature activities for children and young people in Harmony Woods and Diamond Wood, including training youth leaders, purchasing resources, and biodiversity initiatives.

MAY ROUNDUP
This section includes a roundup of our regular ongoing activities, plus other news as and when. Keep an eye on our website and socials for the latest goings-on.

RESPECT THE WILD CAMPAIGN

May saw the start of our Respect the Wild campaign, where we’re sharing a series of blog posts focused on conservation and how to enjoy natural spaces responsibly. These posts explore a variety of important topics, such as the difference between a park and a nature reserve, the importance of keeping dogs on leads to protect ground-nesting birds, why it's best to avoid walking through grassland, what biodiversity really means, and how we can all care for nature in simple, everyday ways.

When we say β€œRespect the Wild,” we’re not asking you to stay away β€” quite the opposite. We invite everyone to discover the wonder of Andover’s wild places, but to do so with care, curiosity, and consideration for the plants, animals, and ecosystems that thrive there.

MONDAY VOLUNTEER CONSERVATION DAYS

MONDAY 19TH MAY 2025 AT HARMONY WOODS

What a brilliant day at Harmony Woods. Volunteers made a real difference at our local nature reserve by completing a variety of important tasks.

Sam, Stephen, and Paul repaired the Enham access gate and built a new Hampshire gate, improving access to the chalk pond ahead of half-term activities. Henry cleaned up the dipping pond area, with Harrow Way students helping to top up water levels. Simone, Liang, and Jacey carried out a perimeter walk for Nature’s Calendar monitoring and cleaned signs. The team also trimmed brambles and strimmed around entrances. Doreen checked the sedum roof plants and kept everyone fuelled with tea. Meanwhile, led by Izzi, Sylvie, and Liz, students helped water wildflowers and helped with pond hedge maintenance β€” ensuring our green spaces stay vibrant and welcoming for wildlife. Amazing work, everyone!

HARROW WAY WILDFLOWER SOWING

On the 22nd May, Hebe, our new Youth Activities Officer visited Harrow Way Community School. She joined forces with the school’s environmental prefects and a group of enthusiastic younger students to sow wildflower seeds as part of our Disappearing Wildflower project. The seedlings will be nurtured at our Vigo Road allotment over summer, then transplanted to Harmony Woods in October to form a new wildflower meadow.

This project aims to combat the decline of native wildflowers species while supporting pollinators, and boosting biodiversity. The initiative also encourages environmental awareness and stewardship. The partnership between our team and Harrow Way Community School highlights the importance of community collaboration in tackling environmental challenges

LONGSTOCK ST MARY'S CHURCH VISIT
On the 24th May, we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming visitors from one of our generous supporters, St Mary’s Church, Longstock, to the wood. It was a truly heart-warming and productive morning. They joined Hebe, our 2025 ecological intern, and Natalia to help survey the wood as part of the Nature in Harmony project. It was a lovely way to connect over a shared love of nature, and we’re so grateful for their time, energy, and continued support.

And the celebration of nature doesn’t stop there! On Saturday, June 15th, from 2–4pm, St Mary’s Church Longstock is hosting their very own Church Count on Nature event, complete with a wildlife survey and a community art competition. Theme: β€œNature, God’s Miracle”.

MAY HALF-TERM NATURE EXPLORERS

This May half-term was packed with adventure, curiosity, and creativity for our young Nature Explorers who joined us at Harmony Woods for two exciting sessions outdoor sessions. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us!

The Gruffalo Trail saw explorers set off on a magical woodland journey along the Gruffalo trail, collecting natural treasures to craft their own Gruffalo crowns. The day was packed with woodland games and free exploration, sparking imaginations and connecting everyone with the natural world.

Freshwater Adventures saw our nature explores explore pond-dipping where they discovered dragonfly larvae, diving beetlesβ€”and even newts! Inspired by their finds, they created their own imaginative pond creatures using clay. The day also included nature games like β€œMeet the Trees”.

Congratulations to Matt, Natalia, and Hebeβ€”who not only planned but delivered their own sessions for the first time! Matt and Natalia, both graduates of our Youth Team, are now Youth Leaders with ATU. We can’t wait for more outdoor adventures ahead, stay tuned for updates on Nature Explorers sessions over the summer!
