Dragon Garden

Saturday 12th August saw the start of the second part of the Dragon Garden, smoothing and sculpting! Thanks to those that help us during the earth moving week, the garden is really starting to take shape. Below is a great aerial shot of the dragon, taken by Leroy Forbes.

Photos by Leroy Forbes

With the help of the community on Saturday and during this week, the dragon will be smoothed and sculpted into its final shape. Using hands, rakes and shovels the team has really started to create the lasting shape, ready for planting in October. There are still spaces left to join in with this fabulous project ], all are welcome, check out the end of the blog for more information.

As a thank you to those who contribute to the community-created wood, the completed garden will not be open to the general public, being reserved for the benefit of all who volunteer their time to create and care for the Diamond Wood (including everybody who helped to create the garden), for Sandy’s family and friends, and for schools and groups who book in to run an event or use the ‘people’ facilities.

Summer Club

On Wednesday 9th August the Youth Team and Nature and Community Officer Jo had a lovely prep day at Harmony Woods, ready for the summer club in a couple of weeks! The team practised some of the activities they will be leading, as well as making resources and taking through their roles.

We are really looking forward to everyone joining us and the team are super excited to provide you with a fantastic experience!

Dragon Garden Creation - 29th July till 18th August

THE DRAGON GARDEN PART TWO STARTS THIS WEEK!

The idea of a Dragon Garden was formed as a memorial to the late Sandy, a dear friend of Andover Trees United and its members. He was a practising Druid and was fascinated by Dragons. To fit with the local legend, Dan Lobb (our landscape designer, trustee and dear friend of Sandy), has based this memorial dragon garden on the Wherwell Cockatrice.

The event will run in three parts:

Part One: Digging and Shovelling - Saturday 29th July till Monday 31st July

Part Two: Sculpting and Smoothing - Monday 12th August till Saturday 18th August

Part Three: Planting and Celebration - Saturday 14th October

We would love to have your help at any stage of the event!

Dragon Garden

We are creating a new feature in Harmony Woods! Dan Lobb, an ATU trustee and a renowned landscape designer, has designed the garden to be a synergy between the local legend of the Wherwell Cockatrice and Native American Mounds. The Dragon Garden concept was formed as a memorial to the late Sandy Burnfield, a dear friend of Andover Trees United and its members. He was a practising Druid and was fascinated by Dragons.

This week work continued, using a digger and dumper from Brandon Tool Hire, and our fabulous volunteers have managed to finish all the major earth moving! The area has been completely dug out and all three mounds have been completed, ready for the smoothing and sculpting stage. A MASSIVE thank you to all those who have helped so far!

The next stage will start on Saturday 12th August until Friday 18th August. Families welcome, check out the end of the blog for more information.

Four Fun Fridays

Four fun Fridays is a set of events organised by Test Valley Borough Council, That run every Friday in August, in Andover High Street. There will be a series of performances, interactive works and activities for all to enjoy.

This year’s theme is ‘Nature’ so of course we had to attend again! We spent the day meeting lots of lovely people from the Andover community, creating peace doves, ready to be used on International Peace Day (September 21st) in our annual presession. It was lovely to see so many faces, old and new, and hope that everyone enjoyed their time with us!

Simply Health Volunteer Day

On Thursday the 27th July the API engineering team from the Andover branch of Simplyhealth UK, had a business volunteer day at our allotment on Vigo Road. Simplyhealth allows its employees three days volunteering a year and we were very grateful that they were able to volunteer with us.

The team spent the day doing some much needed work at the allotment, mainly potting up our wildflower plugs and seedlings. Thanks to their fantastic work we are now all set to plant out the flowers at Harmony Woods in October. They also helped by weeding the tree nursery beds and shearing back the hedge!

The Nature Nurture Project

The Nature Nurture Project is a project designed to help local children and young people to connect with nature. It is funded by the HiWCF, and will allow groups of young people to design their own project at Harmony Woods.

This week saw the last Nature Nurture session of 2023, and for Harrow Way School. The two groups joined together this week, to complete an orienteering course. They used compasses to find specific locations within Harmony Woods. Once at those locations they had to find a letter to be able to spell a word. They found out the word was ‘HEDGE’.

After orienteering, they play some environmentally themed games, their favourite being bat and moth, due to being blindfolded. A real strategic game, it was really lovely to see the children working as a team to avoid the bat, as well as using the space within the circle cleverly.

For the last part of the session, the students got to learn how to make their own fires, using tinder and kindling they could find in the wood. Once they got their fires going, it was time to roast some marshmallows!

9th Andover Scouts Visit

This week we had a wonderful scout evening with the 9th Andover Scouts group. They came to Harmony Woods and had an evening of woodland maintenance. As a team they weeded and mulched along the base of the hedgerow that was planted at the beginning of the year.

For the last part of the session, the scouts got to learn how to make their own fires, using tinder and kindling they could find in the wood. Once they got their fires going, it was time to roast some marshmallows!

The Nature Nurture Project

The Nature Nurture Project is a project designed to help local children and young people to connect with nature. It is funded by the HiWCF, and will allow groups of young people to design their own project at Harmony Woods.

Mother nature had a different plan for today! Due to the wet and windy weather the last Nature Nurture session with the first group of Andover Young Carers had to be held at their bungalow. The young carers have come to the end of their projects they had designed at Harmony Woods therefore they decided to play some games indoors to escape the downpour. A competitive game of air hockey, pool and uno were amongst the variety of games played. Check out the action shots below!

Between the Barrows - Community Archaeology - June 24th - July 9th

This week has seen the excavation of the section ditch continue. With two more community groups and school visits, the dig site has really developed this week!

Lots of struck flint has been found in the spoil pile and they have managed to uncover the chalk walls of the barrow at the original site from 2016, that is located to the left of the cabin. The new site started this year has reached the clay layer, with possible sightings for the top of the barrow wall!

Check out this Friday’s blog post for the full details of this community Archaeology project.

Between the Barrows - Community Archaeology - June 24th - July 9th

We are delighted to announce that we are finally able to resume our programme of community archaeology - “Between the Barrows”.

Archaeologists from Southampton University have been visiting Harmony Woods each year since 2016 excavating between Bronze Age round barrows, or burial mounds. The exact location of the barrows was called into question, and 2020-2021 saw small groups of archaeologists undertaking test digs to precisely locate one of the ditches. In 2021, while digging out the footings for the main timber supports for the Cabin, the ditch was discovered.

Last year, 2022, the Southampton-University-based team of archaeologists were joined by a small group of ATU volunteers to excavate a cross-section of the ditch. This year, we are once more able to invite schools and the public to work alongside the archaeologists as they excavate a second section of the ditch.

This week has seen the beginning of the excavation of the section ditch. With two community groups and three schools visiting, the dig is well and truly underway! The school groups have also been able to learn about bronze age life with Mr. Square (an example of a Bronze Age skeleton) and Wode/Indigo tie dying. The team and the volunteers have managed to find many worked flints as they have begun to dig further into the barrow.

The Harrow Way group had a really busy session! With the boys finishing their den last week, they decided to do tie-dying this week. They designed and dyed a t-shirt each, ready to be washed at home. The girls made perfume after foraging through the woods to find the scents they liked best! After this the group got together to play hide and seek tag!

The Nature Nurture Project

The Nature Nurture Project is a project designed to help local children and young people to connect with nature. It is funded by the HiWCF, and will allow groups of young people to design their own project at Harmony Woods.

This week, Kids on Track had their fourth session. They finished building their garden furniture by assembling the last palette sofa. After the construction of their last sofa was complete, they also painted it grey to match the other two. They also added personal flourishes with acrylic paint.

Photos taken by Abbey Sadler

The first group of Andover Young Carers also wanted to spend some time with us at the Bungalow this week. They showed us around, we had a lovely afternoon tea and tried to fly a kite. It was lovely to see them in their own environment and enjoying the sunshine.

Andover College Careers Fair

The Andover Trees United team arrived in the land rover and wheelbarrowed their trees into The Lights! The Careers Fair put on by Andover College was lovely. It was great to meet so many other wonderful charities and volunteers, everyone was so friendly and welcoming.

During the course of the afternoon Sharon (Admin Officer) and Jo (Nature and Community Officer) were joined by Natalia, a member of the Youth Team, who was able to explain to the young people what life as a volunteer looks like. The team met so many amazing young people; so many of them had planted trees at Harmony Woods when they were at primary school and were super enthusiastic about how their trees looked now.

We can't wait for these young people to start volunteering with us!

Second Saturday ‘Helping Hands’

The morning of the 10th saw Jo drive over the new wood burner for the Cabin. Ben, along with some friends and the team helped unload, ready for it to be installed in the new Cabin. Dave continued work to the window shutters of the Cabin, fitting bolts and handles.

In the afternoon, the weather was very hot and a series of light, but essential tasks, were organised:

  • Watering of the large Silver Birch which requires gallons every day in this hot dry spell

  • Raking and clearing the wood shards put down to manage muddy ground and walkways over winter - to allow grasses and flowers to regrow

  • Putting up the commemorative artwork made by volunteers on King Charles’ Coronation Big Help Out Day

The afternoon team members included:

Wendy, Jenny, Andrew, Liz, Chelles, Sarah, Henry - joined by founder members Fiona and John. Fiona & John moved to Wales a few years ago but remain in touch, Fiona still volunteering regularly by monitoring the charity’s inbox.

Andover U3A Wildflower Walk

On Wednesday 14th June, Andover U3A came to Harmony Woods to enjoy a morning of wildflowers. The group enjoyed a drink and a biscuit while hearing about the history, purpose and future of Andover Trees United for Nature and Community Officer, Abbey. It was lovely to see how interested they were in the project, asking many questions and enquiring about volunteering.

The group then embarked on their wildflower walk with Intern Ecologist, Laura. She guided them around Harmony woods, introducing them to the wildflowers that call the wood home. She explained their key features and their importance to their environment. The group were already very knowledgeable, but some new knowledge was shared between them. Some great finds for the day were the pyramid orchid, goat's beard and the fully parasitic broomrape. They also spotted many butterflies; including the brown meadow and marbled white.

The morning was enjoyed by all and Andover Trees United would like to thank the U3A for their attendance and their very generous and unexpected donation to the cabin.

The Nature Nurture Project

The Nature Nurture Project is a project designed to help local children and young people to connect with nature. It is funded by the HiWCF, and will allow groups of young people to design their own project at Harmony Woods.

This week, Kids on Track had their third session. They continued to build their garden furniture by assembling another palette sofa. After the construction of their second sofa was complete, they started to paint them both grey.

The Harrow Way School Group wanted to create some garden furniture as well and continued Den Building! The group making the garden furniture created a sofa out of palettes. The den building team had some disappointing news this week. Unfortunately, due to Harmony Woods being a Community Woodland, their Den they built last time was destroyed by members of the public. However, after feeling a bit disheartened, they did manage to rebuild it and place the signs they created for it in school. They also enjoyed a game of Hide and Seek Tag and helped water the large poplar tree at the entrance of Harmony Woods.

The first group of Andover Young Carers wanted to spend some time with us at the Bungalow this week. They showed us around, played games with us and even a bit of cheerleading! It was lovely to see them in their own environment and enjoying the sunshine.

The Nature Nurture Project

The Nature Nurture Project is a project designed to help local children and young people to connect with nature. It is funded by the HiWCF, and will allow groups of young people to design their own project at Harmony Woods.

This week was the second session for Kids on Track and they started making their garden furniture out of pallets today. Following instructions and working as a team, the young lads managed to create their first piece, a SOFA! They sanded, glued, nailed and sawed their way to successfully constructing a lovely outdoor sofa.

The second group of Andover Young Carers continued their Green Craft sessions with Tie Dying! They used traditional techniques to create exciting patterns on strips of cloth, perfect for wall hangings or a tea towel. They also enjoyed playing a game of hide and seek in the sun.

School Seed Planting

The Andover Trees United team arrived to talk about wildflowers with several classes at Portway Junior School this week. The children were very excited and full of energy, curiosity and questions.

The children were introduced to field scabious, birdsfoot trefoil, wild marjoram, kidney vetch, foxglove and musk mallow. They used fantastic observational skills to identify each flower and followed this up by playing a game of Wildflower Bingo! Great values of teamwork were observed as the group chose their favourite flower and identified them to win the game.

Each group then planted two trays of seeds that have now been transported back to the warmth and safety of the Vigo Road Allotments. Once the flowers have grown, the classes will be invited up to Harmony Woods to plant their wildflowers out. It was a lovely afternoon, enjoyed by all.

We had a lovely morning at Appleshaw Primary School. We had the real pleasure of working with a group of Year Two children. It was a beautiful afternoon, the sun was beaming down on the undercover outdoor area that we were working in and the children managed to stay focussed on their wildflowers, even with class photos taking place at the same time! The children worked in groups, with mums and grandmothers, to observe and discuss their nominated wildflower, before using wax and watercolours to produce some beautiful realistic images. The children particularly enjoyed participating in creative work alongside their families, and were awed by some of their parents' work.

The children worked hard, sowing their seeds and showed great understanding of the process of germination. This was our final seed sowing session with local schools and the polytunnel at the allotment is now bursting at the seams!

We look forward to the children joining us in the woods in the Autumn to plant the flowers out.

The Nature Nurture Project

The Nature Nurture Project is a project designed to help local children and young people to connect with nature. It is funded by the HiWCF, and will allow groups of young people to design their own project at Harmony Woods.

This week was the first session for Kids on Track and they started with a pond dip! Using our dipping pond, they took several scoops and managed to identify lots of aquatic minibeasts. Their favourites included; bloodworms, leeches and waterlouse. With the help of the ATU team, they checked the large wildlife ponds to identify the newts. We have Smooth Newts! Also known as Common Newts (Lissotriton vulgaris).

The Harrow Way School Group continued their green craft lessons with Tie-Dying and continued Den Building! The group tie-dying did so with canvas bags and fabric dye, they also started painting palettes that they will be using in next week's lesson. The den building team used a tripod knot to create the frame for their Den. After some deliberation, they decided to use a palette for the base to raise it from the ground, and three other palettes for the walls.

The first group of Andover Young Carers continued with their Fairy Trail creation! They finished most of their fairy houses, ready to paint and varnish next session. They also enjoyed playing a game of rugby in the sun.

School Seed Planting

The Andover Trees United team arrived to talk about wildflowers with a mixed class of Years R, 1 and 2 at Vernham Dean School this week. The children were very excited and full of energy, curiosity and questions.

The children were introduced to field scabious, birdsfoot trefoil, wild marjoram, kidney vetch, foxglove and musk mallow. They used fantastic observational skills to identify each flower and followed this up producing beautiful wax and watercolour pictures. Great values of kindness were observed as the group studied each other's artwork. They looked stunning. We were incredibly lucky to have a large number of parents and grandparents join us for the afternoon. It was fabulous to see the mixed generations working together.

After a quick stretch of our legs, we moved outside so that the children could plant the seed of the flowers that they had been drawing and painting. Each group planted two trays of seeds that have now been transported back to the warmth and safety of the Vigo Road Allotments.  Once the flowers have grown, the class and their family helpers will be invited up to Harmony Woods to plant their wildflowers out. It was a lovely afternoon, enjoyed by all.

Loft Singers - Singing in the Summer

This May Day (Monday 1st May 2023) the Loft Singers and friends performed traditional Beltane celebrations to sing in the summer. They performed traditional folk songs, several arranged by Paul Sartin as part of choirs. The performance celebrated May as the return of the Spring; with the birds singing, leaves greening and sun shining, the day was a glorious one. The singing followed by wine and nibbles, tea and cake.

The singers chose to sing where trees were planted in memory of former choir leaders Sarah Morgan and Paul Sartin. Paul led projects for ATU last summer (Voices in Harmony and Living by the Ash Tree Waters) and he is greatly missed by all - this was a lovely way to remember and connect to him. The singers were delighted that Paul’s mum, Angie, could join us.
