We are delighted to announce that we are finally able to resume our programme of community archaeology - “Between the Barrows”.
Archaeologists have been visiting Harmony Woods each year since 2016 excavating between Bronze Age round barrows, or burial mounds. The exact location of the barrows was called into question and 2020-2021 saw small groups of archaeologists undertaking test digs to precisely locate one of the ditches.
In 2021, while digging out the footings for the main timber supports for the Cabin, the ditch was discovered. Last year, 2022, the Southampton-University-based team of archaeologists were joined by a small group of ATU volunteers to excavate a cross-section of the ditch.
This year, we are once more. able to invite schools and the public to work alongside the archaeologists as they excavate a second section of the ditch.
If you like the idea of unearthing the past in the company of experts who will interpret what you are uncovering, we would love to hear from you. If you can lend strong arms to help with the initial site prep over the weekend of the 24th & 25th June, we would love the help.
