Members Celebrate the Summer Solstice at Diamond Wood
On Sunday, Andover Trees United welcomed members to Diamond Wood for our very first Members' Social, bringing together supporters, volunteers and friends of the charity for an afternoon of storytelling, discovery, creativity and community as we celebrated the Summer Solstice.
The event was created as an opportunity to thank our members for their ongoing support and to give them the chance to spend time together in the woodland they help protect. It was also a chance to showcase some of the projects, people and stories that make Andover Trees United such a special community.
The afternoon began with storytelling from the wonderful Amanda Kane-Smith. Her tale of the Feuding Farms transported listeners into a world of local folklore and community spirit, setting the perfect tone for the day and reflecting many of the values that sit at the heart of Andover Trees United: connection, collaboration and a shared responsibility for the places we care about.
As members enjoyed tea, coffee and cake in the sunshine, our founder Wendy Davis spoke about the vital role members play in helping the charity achieve its mission. She shared how membership support enables Andover Trees United to continue caring for Diamond Wood, creating opportunities for young people, supporting biodiversity and delivering activities that connect people with nature throughout the year.
Wendy Davis,
Founder & Trustee of ATU:
"Andover Trees United is about so much more than trees. It's about people, community and creating opportunities for future generations. Every member here today has played a part in making that happen. Your support gives us the confidence and stability to continue growing our impact, and we simply couldn't do it without you."
There was plenty for members to explore during the afternoon. Our intern, Kanchi, created a woodland spotter trail and arts tent, encouraging visitors to slow down, observe the natural world around them and express their creativity through nature-inspired art. The activities were enjoyed by members of all ages and provided a wonderful opportunity to engage with the woodland in a different way.
Members were also treated to a fascinating insight into the history beneath their feet. Chris Elmer and the team shared the archaeology of the site before guiding visitors through this year's latest addition to the Between the Barrows project. The walk offered a unique perspective on the rich heritage of the landscape and highlighted the many layers of history that exist alongside the woodland's ecological importance.
With laughter echoing through the trees, conversations flowing and the sun shining throughout the afternoon, the event was a wonderful celebration of community and a fitting way to mark the longest day of the year.
The Members' Social also served as a reminder of just how important membership is to the future of Andover Trees United. As an award-winning, community-led environmental charity, we rely on the support of our members to help care for Diamond Wood, deliver environmental education, support young people and create opportunities for people of all ages to connect with nature. Membership provides vital unrestricted income, helping us respond to local needs while ensuring the long-term sustainability of our work.
Whether supporting tree planting, woodland management, community wellbeing activities, biodiversity projects or youth engagement programmes, every member plays a direct role in helping people and nature thrive together. Membership is available for individuals, couples, families, young people, volunteers and businesses, making it easy for everyone to become part of the growing Andover Trees United community.
