Year 3 Pupils at Knights Enham School Get Hands Dirty with Wildflower Project
Knights Enham Primary School, June 10, 2025 — A sunny morning at Knights Enham School was filled with eager young gardeners as 30 Year 3 pupils took part in a special conservation activity as part of the Disappearing Wildflower project.
The pupils began by learning how to carefully prick out young wildflower seedlings — a delicate process of separating seedlings to prepare them for planting. Following this, they moved on to potting on, transferring the seedlings into larger pots to give the plants more room to grow strong.
This year, the focus was on bird’s-foot trefoil, one of six key wildflowers from the “Six Trees and Six Flowers” initiative. The seedlings will be nurtured at the local allotment on Vigo Road until they’re ready to be planted in a new wildflower meadow this October.
The Disappearing Wildflower project aims to reverse the decline of native wildflower species, provide vital habitats for pollinators like bees and butterflies, and boost biodiversity in the local area. By engaging young people in hands-on conservation work, organisers hope to inspire environmental awareness and stewardship from an early age.
Once established, the new meadow will become a vital green space supporting a wide range of wildlife, including birds, bees, butterflies, and many other species.
A huge thank you goes to Knights Enham School and its enthusiastic pupils for their wonderful contribution to this important project!
