Join Our 10th Anniversary Community Archaeology Dig This Summer
Help uncover local history in The Diamond Wood
This summer marks a special milestone for Andover Trees as we celebrate 10 years of community archaeology in The Diamond Wood.
Since 2016, archaeologists, volunteers, schools and local residents have worked together to investigate the fascinating Bronze Age landscape hidden beneath our woodland floor. Year after year, discoveries have helped us better understand the people who once lived, worked and were buried here thousands of years ago.
After years of investigation, archaeologists have finally uncovered the elusive ditch that lies between two ancient burial barrows. Now, as part of our tenth anniversary season, we're inviting the community to help us dig deeper and discover what secrets remain beneath the soil.
Whether you're interested in archaeology, local history, conservation, or simply trying something new, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved.
Be Part of the First Dig
Before the excavation can begin, we need volunteers to help prepare the site.
Site Preparation Days
Saturday 13 June & Sunday 14 June
11:00am – 4:00pm
We'll be setting up camp, removing turf and preparing the excavation area ready for the archaeologists. It's a fantastic opportunity to get involved from the very start and see how an archaeological dig comes together.
No experience is necessary, just sturdy footwear, enthusiasm and a willingness to get stuck in.
Support Local School Visits
One of the most exciting parts of this year's project is the involvement of local schools, giving children the opportunity to experience real archaeology first-hand.
We're looking for volunteers to help support these sessions by welcoming groups, assisting with refreshments and helping the day run smoothly while the children take part in excavation activities.
School Visit Dates
8:30am – 1:00pm
Tuesday 16 June
Thursday 18 June
Tuesday 23 June
Thursday 25 June
Tuesday 30 June
Thursday 2 July
Even if you can only help on one day, your support would make a huge difference.
Exclusive Community Dig Sessions
As a special thank you to our volunteers and members, we're also offering dedicated community dig sessions where you can work alongside professional archaeologists and gain hands-on excavation experience.
Community Dig Dates
1:30pm – 4:00pm
Monday 15 June
Monday 22 June
Monday 29 June
These sessions offer a unique chance to learn archaeological techniques, handle real finds and contribute to our understanding of the site's history.
A Decade of Discovery
Over the past ten years, our archaeology project has brought together hundreds of people of all ages to explore the rich heritage hidden within our woodland. From schoolchildren making their first discoveries to volunteers uncovering ancient features, every season has added another piece to the story of this remarkable landscape.
As we celebrate this tenth anniversary, we'd love for you to be part of the next chapter.
