This August, Andover residents are invited to step back in time and experience the traditional countryside craft of scything. Whether you’re keen to master a new eco-friendly land management skill or simply enjoy the fun of community haymaking, Harmony Woods is hosting two special events to celebrate the art of scything.
Event 1: One-Day Scything Course with Chris Riley
Friday, August 29, 2025 | 10:00 – 16:00
The Cabin at Harmony Woods, Andover
Discover the beauty and practicality of this ancient craft in a full-day course led by expert scyther Chris Riley. Designed for both beginners and those wishing to refine their technique, this hands-on course will give participants the skills and confidence to manage meadows, wildflower areas, and woodland rides with a scythe.
Highlights:
Step-by-step instruction in proper scything techniques
Tools provided – just bring yourself (and a packed lunch!)
Refreshments and snacks included
Practice in the stunning setting of Harmony Woods
Cost:
£50 per person

Event 2: Community Scything & Haymaking Celebration

Round off the summer with a morning of meadow scything, haymaking, and community spirit. This relaxed event welcomes novices and experts alike to join in the rhythm of traditional land care, followed by well-earned refreshments and local cider.
